Tutoring and Mentoring
Tutoring and Mentoring - Helping kids succeed and letting them know the community cares about them. Kiwanis members currently help at Jessie Mae Elementary, Supply Elementary, and Waccamaw school.
The Summer Reading Program makes reading, fun, free, and accessible for kids. The program offers tutoring, story time, activities, crafts, prizes, school supplies, weekly food boxes, a lending library and adult literacy assessments. It is a collaborative effort of the Kiwanis of Shallotte and SBI, Smart Start of Brunswick County, Brunswick Family Assistance, the Rourk Library, Friends of the Library, and Brunswick County Literacy Council.
Kiwanis collect new and used books for children. These books are but into Red Wagons and placed in businesses and professional offices across southern Brunswick County for children to read while they are waiting with their parents.
Aktion club is the only community-service club for adults living with disabilities. Aktion Club allows members to develop initiative and leadership skills in serving their communities while enabling their integration into society.
Terrific Kids is a student recognition program that promotes character development, self-esteem, and perseverance. Students work with their classroom teacher to establish goals to improve their behavior, peer relationships, attendance, or schoolwork.
Key Club International, the largest high school service organization in the world, empowers its members to lead and serve by cultivating leadership skills they will carry with them for a lifetime.
The Shallotte and South Brunswick Islands Kiwanis works with a variety of organizations to provide basic financial education to children and adults.
Field of Honor
The Shallotte and South Brunswick Islands Kiwanis sponsors a Field of Honor at Mulberry Park in Shallotte. This event intended to honor American heroes displays hundreds of flags. Each U.S. flag represents an individual and tells a story. Flags are sponsored for Active Military, Fallen Servicemen and Servicewomen, Veterans, First Responders, Police, Fire, EMS, and Frontline Healthcare Workers.
